The jobs in red listed below require USSA Officials Licenses. Officials licenses are a membership grade of USSA and cost $40. Parents are encouraged to get a license so that they can rotate through all the jobs and avoid the boredom of doing the same job at each race.

Chief of Race Has overall responsibility for race, coordinates with mountain. More details.
Chief of Course
Has overall responsibility for course, including course setting (done by a coach), maintenance, collection of gates after race. Must assure safety of racers and spectators. With Course maintenance workers assures that turning pole is dyed and gates are numbered (coordinate with Head Gatekeeper), that proper fencing is put up at finish area and along course. Start Referee
Assures valid start. More details.
Finish Referee
Assures valid finish. More details
Starter In start shack, sends racers, is in constant communication with finish, checks start wand and communication before the race. More details
Assistant Starter Lines up racers for Starter; assures smooth flow of racers; for races on Odyssey must keep a corridor open for public have access to Olympian. More details.

Midway Station

Reports whether course is clear
Chief of Timing and Calculation Assures system works, tests the day or week before race, runs timing during the race. More details.
Electric Timing Recorder Records times announced by person running electronic timer
Hand Timers & Recorders
There is a set of hand timers and recorders at both the start and finish of the race. One person is stopping the watch when the racer crosses the start or finish line and the other person records that time on the appropriate form. This is the backup to the electronic timers.It is essential to be on time and in place
Chief Gatekeeper
Recruits gatekeepers, numbers gates, organizes gatekeepers and places them in position, collects gatekeeper cards after each run and brings them to the finish. More details.
Gatekeeper

Monitors racers at 2-3 gates during race, reports to Head Gatekeeper. Click here for Gatekeeper instructions.
Course maintenance
(several needed)
Helps maintain course, replace gates, reports to Chief of Course to assist with all course-related tasks
Announcer Uses P.A. system to announce racers and times
Scoreboard Writes times on large sheet near finish
Registration Register the racers and check their USSA and NYSSRA cards. They give the racers their bibs, tickets and a run order. They also accept any late registrations.
Bib Collector

Collects bibs at finish of race
Hospitality
(several needed)
Supplies and distribute post-race refreshments; sometimes soup for gatekeepers
Parent and Coach tickets Distributes tickets to coaches, sells tickets to racer parents.
Race Secretary Receives entries, prepares start order, assigns jobs, gets lift tickets for racers from the mountain, assures presence of Technical Delegate and, if needed, accommodations for T.D., brings race supplies, including materials for gatekeepers, bibs; communicates results to other clubs, NYSSRA, and USSA, as appropriate
