Here are some tips to keep you and yours warm(er) on the hill.
1. DRY YOUR BOOTS. This may be done by putting them over a hot air heater, using a boot dryer, or taking the liners out and letting them air dry. If boots are damp from just persperation, they will be much colder. 2. Dress in layers. Quality long underwear is a must! Then turtleneck, then fleece or sweater (or both )Then your jacket. Wear a good SKI jacket, not a sporty looking football or athletic jacket from Dick's. There is a BIG difference. Don't be afraid to put on another vest or fleece under the jacket. The idea is to trap air between the layers and to allow persperation to move outward through the material while keeping the body dry. DON'T WEAR COTTON GARMENTS if you can help it. Cotton holds moisture and is not as warm as polyester fleece. 3. MITTENS, MITTENS, MITTENS. It is nice to cuddle up with someone on a cold night. Let your fingers do the same and stay much warmer. BIG, BIG difference. 4. ABSOLUTE MUST! A NECK WARMER! Preferably the type that has a stretch hood that goes over the head and under the helmet. Again, use fleece. 5.Don't forget pants under your ski pants. Fleece is best, but if you don't have them, wear a pair of sweat pants. When it is this cold, Don't bother with your GS suit, replace it with a warmer layer. 6. SOCKS. Don't wear cotton. Buy a ski sock. There is a difference. Bring your ski socks with you in your bag, and put them on when putting your boots on. This way they will be dry. (unless you drop them on the wet floor)DRYNESS IS VERY IMPORTANT. 7. Last but not least, DON'T BOTHER COMING IF YOU ARE WEARING SCHOOL CLOTHES UNDER YOUR SKI PANTS AND JACKET. They are totally inappropriate when it is this cold and even when it is warmer, you should wear proper clothing.THIS GOES FOR YOU J1,2,3'S AS WELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One reason for layers is that as the temps. change throughout the day, you can shed layers to keep from overheating, getting sweaty, then getting cold from being damp when the temps. fall in the afternoon. WHEN TEMPS ARE COLD, FASHION IS OUT. DON'T WEAR A SHELL WHEN IT'S COLD AS THIS! DRESS TO LOOK LIKE THE MICHELIN MAN AND BE WARM! etc... Our policy for training is that if the ski area is operating, so are we, We ski in all but the most extreme conditions. This is a part of our sport. Proper attire is a must. If we need to cancel training for any reason, we will do so with as much notice as possible. However, I do not like to cancel based on a forecast more than 6-12 hours prior to the event. They are often too innacurate. Temperatures around 0 to 3 degrees F during training hours are acceptable. If we cancel for cold, we will email you and will have a notice on the website by 1 PM at the latest. Check these sources before you drive to the hill, or call your coach. |
